Get Involved, Take Action

The response to our newsletter, IBBWatch, has been phenomenal; although it is not surprising to realize that many Nigerians regard Ibrahim Babangida as a threat to our nation. To make sure that this campaign is carried on, we need your help to make sure we reach more Nigerians and friends of our country everywhere in the world.

As we draw closer to the transfer of power in 2007, we will upgrade our efforts to buying media space in Nigeria, Europe and the United States. To execute a campaign of this magnitude, we need the support of everyone.

Any contributions you can make will move this campaign forward and together we can expose this powerful military-political cabal. Acting in unity, we can take Babangida and his friends down.

Your donation will send a clear message that Nigerians are no longer to be taken for a ride, and that ordinary Nigerians have taken their future in their hands.

We can do it!

You can also follow up individually by directing letters to the editors of Nigerian newspapers. Here is a sample letter and the email addresses of editors of major news organizations in Nigeria. Remember, you can write the letter in your own words, but stick to the point without being offensive and angry.

To the Editor
I am joining people of goodwill around the world to make it abundantly clear that we reject the on-going bid by General Ibrahim Babangida to rig his way back to power in Nigeria. The question of whether or not Babangida should be allowed to contest the Nigerian presidency in 2007 goes beyond the individual right to vote. Babangida has blantant disregard for, and has, in fact, violated the Nigerian constitution in the many years of his misrule. If the rule of law had not been usurped by the privileged in Nigeria, Babangida would have been living his days behind bars, for his many criminal violations.
The former dictator has been using our legal system to block every attempt to investigate his involvement in the murder of Dele Giwa. We all know of how he single-handedly scuttled the political process in 1993, as well as how he could not explain what happened to the oil windfall of the Gulf War era when under his watch, $12b could not be accounted for. During his administration, corruption soared to new heights. His affluence testifies to his theft of our treasury. How else can he explain his wealth?
Nigeria does not need another military officer to misrule us; and if at all, definitely not someone whose greed and smart fingers we all have witnessed before.
If Babangida were to win a presidential election, can we in good conscience expect him to honor his oath of office? Is he to be trusted, judging by his past? Even if, as some have said, we forgive him - should we forget and promote him?
Nigeria needs a new vision, someone trustworthy, who will usher a new hope, direction and energy. All these, Babangida can not provide. If we keep recycling the same leaders, with the same burden, as Babangida, to leadership positions, we cannot expect a result different from what we have today - poverty, despair, social upheavals, disunity and corruption.
This dictator is the wrong man for the job. He is dangerous, calculating and unrepentant, and we will be wrong to give him another chance to take us back. Nigeria has millions of better materials than Babangida. He should not be allowed to buy us with our money. I say no to Ibrahim Babangida. And I endorse againstbabangida.com.
