Maryam: Failure Has Its Price - Banjo

E-mail Print PDF

"It would have dawned on Babangida that were the kind of the hospital he flew his wife to in California built in Nigeria; the honor he would have received in his country would have been far greater than what he received at the University of California Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center in Los Angeles. The cost of flying his wife remaining back to Nigeria would have been saved. The agony of being in first class and his wife lifeless body in a coffin among luggage would have been saved. This is a wage for Babangida who is regarded as a duplicitous ruler and pernicious schemer, a ruthless and vindictive schemer. By now, Babangida and others like him should have been convinced that failure to work for the greatness of one’s country has its price."

Mrs. Babangida’s death has certainly inflicted pains in the hearts of her husband, children and immediate family.

Unlike the death of the late Dele Giwa in a letter bomb during the General Babangida’s tenure in Nigeria, Mrs. Babangida did not die in inferno. Even though her death came when Babangida’s family members are supposed to be celebrating Christmas and New Year, her death was expected, unlike Dele Giwa and many others whose lives were brought to abrupt end under Babangida’s regime.

She did her best for the rural women whose welfares she sought to promote, but lack of institution still make rural women suffer today, thus causing her vision for the rural women to remain unfulfilled. A very beautiful woman who needed no make up to show her glamour and glow, Maryam was a package of class in the exercise of power. In dressing, she was far better than Michelle Obama. She was a positive touch bearer for first ladies and women operating in the corridors of power. Adieu Madam Maryam Babangida. May the Lord grant her family the fortitude to bear the loss!

The death of Mrs. Babangida has brought further reflections about the misgovernance in Nigeria. Events in life are lessons to others who are willing to learn from them and atone. Death is one of those events, and the way it comes teaches those still alive a sort of lesson. That a former head of state of a naturally great country has to sit in a foreign country’s hospital for months without the respect he would have naturally been accorded if he had built the same hospital with the same equipment, allowing his fellow citizens to use their talents to develop in his country of birth, is a lesson.

It would have dawned on Babangida that were the kind of the hospital he flew his wife to in California built in Nigeria; the honor he would have received in his country would have been far greater than what he received at the University of California Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center in Los Angeles. By now, Babangida and others like him should have been convinced that failure to work for the greatness of one’s country has its price.

Well written. The only thing I would have taken out is the sympathy expressed over her death and the condolence to her family. I thought their stolen billions should have been enough to bribe her away from death. Ndi Ara!!!

My Honest Opinion!
It doesnt matter what a thief does with stolen property,no matter how nicely packaged.
As such Maryam Babangida's motives for setting up the BLP must be thoroughly scrutinized. Self aggrandizement? Conniving distraction? A way to escape the boredom that arose from her husband's intention to stay indefinitely in Aso rock? What was the exit strategy for the BLP? What was the Continuity plan? What was the long term vision?
It was simply a fad - you see!
Also the Ibo have a saying that he who enjoys the loot with a thief is equally a thief. Babangida's motive for grabbing power in 1985 in hindsight is now clear to all and sundry. He had no plan,no principle, nor vision -hence the dilly-dallying experimentalism that characterised his regime (Maradona style)
Moreover we all know that Govt(sorry IBB's GANG) democratized corruption in Nigeria, grossly eroding & inverting the moral scale in such a terrible way that we may not be able to recover in 50 years. The moral crisis that we face today is 90% attributable to the feudal crony-ism & favoritism exploited by the evil genius to perpetuate his grip on power.... See More
I am a living witness. I can never forget how as a young person growing up (just like millions of others) under parents who were well educated , hardworking and principled, I saw severe hardships fall upon my family due to the bastardization of all decent values - hard work, professionalism and honour.
IBB , his wife, fellow political soldiers and their civilian cronies unleashed a reign of looting, self enrichment; neglecting or usurping resources meant for rewarding hard-working professionals like my parents. They practically eliminated the middle class in Nigeria. So in conclusion I refuse to forget those very tough days in the University where my parents struggled to support three of us in the University because their salaries were not paid for months, while idiots and nonentities flaunted their suddenly acquired wealth in complete flagrance of all sense of decency. When I hear the name Babangida, this is all that comes to my mind -Corruption, corruption and more corruption. The worst part of the story is that the man has no shame or sense of propriety. If he ventures to come out to contest the Presidency again in future, I will not be surprised if he wins (afterall our institutions are weak, our Govt executives are mercenenaries for sale and our people have pitifully SHORT memories), but then I will also finally give up hope COMPLETELY about Nigeria and Nigerians. How can we make any progress if we are not able to remember; to differentiate between whats good and whats bad for us as a people?

Let's face it - we have all always suspected Ibrahim Babangida of being a drug dealer. The story of Gloria Okon, Dele Giwa's death, the burning of the Ministry of Defence and other stories are all allegedly tied to an official drug ring during IBB's regime. We researched the rumors, and this is what we found.

In an authoritative report still posted on the web site of the Canadian Parliament on the drug trade in Africa, Labrouse marks out Ibrahim Babangida, Nigeria's former self-appointed president, as one of the drug-dealing dictators in Africa. Read more

Dele Giwa, a journalist, was allegedly murdered on the 26 of October 1986 by the former military dictator Ibrahim Babaginda - following damning publications. Close observers of the Nigerian media feared then it was the beginning of harsh military dictatorship in the country. It was a true assessment.

Babangida refused to appear before the duly constituted Oputa panel, giving assorted reasons for his refusal. Ray Ekpu, Giwa's colleague, said: Well, the government may say that the killers have not been found but the killers are known. ...Many Nigerians agree that it was a state sponsored terrorism and that he was assassinated by the state. Read More

Nigeria's military dictatorship, led by General Ibrahim Babangida, annulled the Jun 12 presidential election and canceled plans to return the nation to civilian rule. Britain, the United States and France condemned the latest military takeover and threatened to toughen sanctions against NigeriaAbacha urged all Nigerians to forget the June 12 election.

Lagos lawyer, Gani Fawehinmi, however, said: "June 12 is a symbol of our democracy. It was a day Nigeria and Nigerians without any discrimination whatsoever united in voting Chief MKO Abiola in the freest election in the history of election in Nigeria. ... Read More

Most Nigerian leaders have been corrupt, but Ibrahim Babangida added new, historic elements to corruption. One prime example is what he did with the defunct BCCI Bank. BCCI's activities in Nigeria were so profoundly, overwhelmingly corrupt as to suggest a very significant level of corruption in Nigerian officialdom generally.

Whereas BCCI's activities in most countries merely involved corrupting a few, key people, in Nigeria the corruption was systemic and endemic, and touched nearly every operation of the bank in Nigeria. The bank was operated by Babangida and his friends, including a deposed powerful ruler in northern Nigeria. Read More
