IBB'S Operatives as the Doomsday Orchestra E-mail
If movie producers were thinking about an appropriate title for a documentary piece on Nigeria‘s future fate, “The 2007 Tragedy That Ended A Nation” could very well pass for an ideal choice. Except that the world is still undergoing a time period that is by nature‘s design, a little under two years away from May of 2007 when the Nigeria presidential election is scheduled to be held. Let us hope that the year 2007 does not become the accelerated maturation time of Nigeria’s likely or impending political doom that the country has been predicted to fall into by the Intelligence Services of some Western nations, notably the United States of America.

Regardless of which of the many dire predictions about Nigeria’s future existence you happen to believe, there’s however, a widely held popular belief among people outside of the country as well as by Nigerians, that perhaps an ill-fated documentary about the demise of Africa’s wealthiest and most populous nation is after all more than likely to be in the works; on Hollywood's drawing board sooner than expected. No one is certain yet of what the fine prints of the script of this likely most unfortunate documentary would be entirely like. But you can certainly expect the devil to be in the details, if or when such a documentary is made!

But one thing is unequivocally certain at the moment. That the single most clear and most present danger to the national security of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is the ever-present, and of course, the audacious political overtures of retired Gen. Ibrahim Babangida and his cronies. Some intelligence experts have predicted that in the event that the peoples of the Federal Republic of Nigeria fail to grab these demonic bulls by the horns, the resultant effect will perhaps doom the country’s nationhood so badly to a point of a total breakdown of the societal structure.

The thieves of the Robin Hood-like fame who currently enjoy unprecedented status of “untouchables” in Nigeria -- much thanks to the Obasanjo administration -- would like nothing more than the continuation of the type of government that’s currently in power at the people’s Aso-Rock. Or in its stead, a total breakdown of the Nigerian society, in which there’s no governmental structure in place that is strong enough at the federal level to have any meaningful impact in an attempt to probe the culprits’ looting of the national treasury both in the past and in the present!

And the premise that the disintegration and possible collapse of the Nigerian nation could bring about the potential end of any probable indictment or eventual trial of her worst rouge citizens such as IBB is perhaps the ultimate escapist fantasy. The former dictator and of course, his partners in crime would be elated to see a chaotic Nigeria erupt into the practice of sectarian mayhem , where the continuation of jungle justice, nepotism, godfathers’ thug touting, and extra-judicial killings of innocent people to intimidate potential challengers, are the order of the society. That is the supposition in some quarters. Credible intelligence assessment of the Nigerian situation by the U.S. Secret Service also lends plausibility to this supposition, considering the dynamics on the ground in Nigeria today.

So, it’s not surprising therefore, that the Babangida political ensemble, led by Nigeria’s foremost public enemy himself is now beating the drums and blasting the trumpets more prominently and consistently in preparation for an all-out onslaught against the will of the Nigerian people. History amply records how Ibrahim Babangida has always insulted the intelligence of the Nigerian people, even though he has quite often been very crafty about his evil details throughout his thirty or so odd years in the public eye.

But what would it really take to infuriate the long-suffering and incredibly resilient peoples of the Federal Republic of Nigeria? Will the members of the IBB Doomsday Orchestra finally strike the fatal chord or note that will do them all in? The odds are that the headstrong former dictator, with an estimated sum of nearly 40 billion U.S. dollars of stolen public treasury money from the Nigerian people at his personal disposal, would probably continue to allow his obstinate political aspiration to becloud his sense of judgment.

Simply put, because he’s afraid that his day of reckoning is around the corner, when his current shield will have to vacate the corridors of power in Nigeria, IBB is likely to press-on with his unchecked insults on Nigerians as he recently “cleared the air” of any doubts about his intention to return to his treasury looting presidential position. The man may be smiling before his admirers during photo-ops, but he’s also afraid of what the future holds for him in Nigeria under potentially more unfavorable circumstances.

As he reminded his pig-headed political ensemble in a recent remark in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, IBB once again moved an inch closer to Nigeria’s doomsday concerns with his suggestion that his “… 007 ambition is on course…” The theory that IBB’s political aspiration is “driven by fear,” as has previously been suggested by The Sun’s Biodun Durojaiye, makes much sense. My brilliant and intrepid comrade is not afraid to call a spade, a spade.

The truth of the matter is that since Nigeria has become a den of political robbers and treasury looters, drug dealers, and countless “419” perpetrators, the likes of IBB and all the other famous public thieves and thugs in his ensemble will endeavor to develop some protectionist barriers aimed at safeguarding their private interests. That’s precisely why the general is determined to return to the fort! But the fort will not be the same for Nigeria’s most wanted treasury looter.

President Obasanjo and his “Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)” may have understandably “chickened-out” from his government’s hitherto pledge to totally probe corruption in Nigeria. It’s hard for people to bite the fingers that fed them, as the old saying goes. Especially when those fingers have a not-so-hidden agenda to succeed the recipient of the feeding.

There are lots of corrupt officials in the Obasanjo administration as well, including the Vice- President, Abubakar Atiku, who recently came under heat for some alleged involvement in money laundering to the staggering tune of over $600 million U.S. dollars through his American wife, Jennifer. Yet, an equally questionable personality like the multi-millionaire Abia State governor, Orji Uzor Kalu has directly accused Ppresident Obasanjo of engaging in corrupt practices too. To some people, that may sound like the kettle calling the pot black.

But there’s hardly any place else in the world besides Nigeria, where an incumbent president dispels as “market place rumor,” certain credible allegations that his predecessor such as Ibrahim Babangida has soiled hands! Or perhaps the president’s remark at a recent G-8 summit in Scotland was simply a case of the pot not willing to call the kettle black? Either way you slice it, the problem of corruption in Nigeria in chronically endemic. While there are some decent folks in the midst of the rotten bunch, those decent ones are hardly ever recognized or heard of. The reason for that is simple: only the thieves and the rouges are glorified or showered with praises.

The uniqueness of the current social and moral decadence of the Nigerian society with respect to the culture of unprecedented corruption makes the country a fertile ground for the likes of Ibrahim Babangida and his cronies to walk around freely with so much boldness. Consequently, the inherent danger in their activities appear not to be so obvious to most Nigerians. And those who posses the foresight to discern the dangers are either powerless to correct the anomalies or they are simply “equally yoked” together with the other social wrong-doers in singing the same old tunes of embezzlement, bribery, and continuous corruption of the entire system.

In my previous article, entitled Bedeviled by Social Culprits, a great deal of lamentation for Nigeria’s woes was reflected in the gross indictment of the status-quo. However, it is important to note here that the problem of corruption is not peculiar to the opportunists of the IBB upper class gang only. It would suffice to state that while the IBB’s political operatives will be largely responsible for Nigeria’s probable doomsday, should they continue to drum for the corrupt general, it’s Gen Ibrahim Babangida himself that will be ultimately held accountable, should Nigeria go belle up in inferno as a result of his obtrusive and insatiable lust for undeserved power and stolen monies of the Nigeria people.

If the old soldier from Minna has any wisdom left in him, he should rightly convince himself that it’s not sufficient that he thinks he has the social status, means, and ill-gotten financial resources to come back and insult the intelligence of the peoples of Nigeria once again. In the final analysis, it’s not the pig-headed members of Nigeria’s Doomsday Orchestra who are drumming for him that will be held accountable, but Babangida himself. And the option of running away to go claim political asylum in an oversea country will not be on the table. Somebody need to tell IBB to take this wise counsel, and retire from his evil details in the Nigerian political stage immediately.

“You are not my party member and as such, you don't expect me to support a successful completion of your tenure, not to talk of second tenure because there is no way I can work against my party candidate to favour your own mandate when you are not a member of my party.” - President Olusegun Obasanjo to Governor Peter Obi
