Major Debo Basorun was the military press secretary to Ibrahim Babangida (retd.). In this interview with NIYI ODEBODE of The Punch, he opens up on his ordeals in the hands of the former dictator and the death of Dele Giwa.

Under what circumstances did you leave the army?

There was a threat to my life and that is what this brouhaha is all about. I was privy to some of the terrible things Babangida and Akilu did when we were in the army. There was this determination on their path to silence me. I was surprised when I saw my name in the newspapers two weeks ago. They said I was wanted. That is far from the truth. I resigned from the army.

You said you were privy to some information. What information?

My problem is 2011. Babangida wants to become president again. I am not saying I am the only person, but I am one of those who know that he is connected to the death of Dele Giwa. That is why they have been trying to kill me.

Presiding Bishop of the  Winners' Chapel, Dr. David Oyedepo, has said the ghost of the annulled June 12, 1993, presidential election will continue to haunt self-styled military president, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, for life.

The cleric said Nigerians are wiser than Babangida and have not forgotten the pains he inflicted on them through the cancellation of the polls adjudged to have been won by the late business mogul, Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (M.K.O.) Abiola.

"I'm Not The Only Thief!"

Groups suspected to be allies of former military dictator, General Ibrahim Babangida, IBB, have called for the probe of former president, General Olusegun Obasanjo, on an alleged $16 billion power scam, to divert attention from a possible prosecution of IBB's wanton waste of public funds during his regime - a move that may put a wrenchin the works.

Addressing a press conference in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, recently, the IBB allies faulted civil society groups’ call that IBB should be probed on the alleged misappropriation of $12.4 billion oil windfall during the military dictator’s years in government.

IBB Plays Politics With Abiola's Name

Furious responses trail a call by former military dictator, Ibrahim Babangida, for the immortalisation of the late Moshood Abiola after annulling the election Abiola won 17 years ago. Prominent Nigerias maintained that while it is a good thing to immortalise Abiola, the advocacy from the architect of the annulment of the election is an insult.

abiolaOkay. Hold your seat tight, so you don't fall off the chair cracking reading this one: An incoherent Evil Genius, General Ibrahim Babangida, now wants the late business giant and winner of the historic June 12 election, M.K.O. Abiola, immotalized for putting such a good fight for democracy  - a fight that Babangida used military might to crush when he selfishly annuled the wishes of Nigerians expressed by popular vote.

Now read more details of the now regular IBB spin at the Lagos Airport, where he seems to deliberately pass during weekends to continue his senseless logic of explaining his unforgivable mistakes in a bid to recapture presidential power.

Evil Genius, Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, has declined comments on the Federal Government’s fresh plans to probe his alleged role in the Pius Okigbo’s report on the $12.2b Gulf War windfall during his administration.

At the public presentation and the launch of a book, titled: “Impressions and Facts of Nigeria under General Ibrahim Babangida, 1985 to 1993” by the Zaria-based Centre for Democratic Development Research and Training (CDDERT) in Abuja, Babangida, who was the special guest of honour, pointedly told his aides that he would not  speak, when journalists asked to talk to him.

Many Shun Image Polishing Book Launch

Former military ruler, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, is fighting hard to make himself appealing by launching a book crafted to change public opinion about how he misruled Nigeria. His stooge is the Director of the Centre for Democratic Development, Research and Training, Dr. Abubakar Mohammed, who hepled write the book titled: "Impressions And Facts About IBB’s Govt: 1985-1993." The book captures the events in the Babangida government, with a clear intention to make the outcome of the regime better than it was.  The event was largely avoided by notable invitees.

Lies Of The Con Artist

Given the way he almost ran the country aground and his demystification in 2007 when he wanted to run for the highest office but failed, not a few people were shocked or felt insulted that one-time Nigerian leader, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, IBB and Maradona for style, signified his intention to become president again in 2011. To be accepted by the people, IBB has been weaving a tapestry of lies, all of which cannot stand the test of logic. Of course, critics have been intercepting such falsehoods mid-air, smashing them into smithereens.

Let's face it - we have all always suspected Ibrahim Babangida of being a drug dealer. The story of Gloria Okon, Dele Giwa's death, the burning of the Ministry of Defence and other stories are all allegedly tied to an official drug ring during IBB's regime. We researched the rumors, and this is what we found.

In an authoritative report still posted on the web site of the Canadian Parliament on the drug trade in Africa, Labrouse marks out Ibrahim Babangida, Nigeria's former self-appointed president, as one of the drug-dealing dictators in Africa. Read more

Dele Giwa, a journalist, was allegedly murdered on the 26 of October 1986 by the former military dictator Ibrahim Babaginda - following damning publications. Close observers of the Nigerian media feared then it was the beginning of harsh military dictatorship in the country. It was a true assessment.

Babangida refused to appear before the duly constituted Oputa panel, giving assorted reasons for his refusal. Ray Ekpu, Giwa's colleague, said: Well, the government may say that the killers have not been found but the killers are known. ...Many Nigerians agree that it was a state sponsored terrorism and that he was assassinated by the state. Read More

Most Nigerian leaders have been corrupt, but Ibrahim Babangida added new, historic elements to corruption. One prime example is what he did with the defunct BCCI Bank. BCCI's activities in Nigeria were so profoundly, overwhelmingly corrupt as to suggest a very significant level of corruption in Nigerian officialdom generally.

Whereas BCCI's activities in most countries merely involved corrupting a few, key people, in Nigeria the corruption was systemic and endemic, and touched nearly every operation of the bank in Nigeria. The bank was operated by Babangida and his friends, including a deposed powerful ruler in northern Nigeria. Read More
