'They Can't Do What I Did to Abiola to Me'

E-mail Print PDF

Nigeria's former military dictator, Ibrahim Babangida, has said that if he contests election and wins, nobody can annul it.  Mr. Babangida, who was responding to questions from journalists shortly after he paid a courtesy call to the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, implied that he was able to annul the 1993 election because at that time, he operated as a military ruler. That sword he murdered with, according to IBB, can not be used to kill him.

Mr. Babangida had in 1993 annulled the election of the late Moshood Abiola, who was believed to have won the election.

No room for annulment

Mr. Babangida, who is aspiring to be a democratically elected president in the 2011 polls, said annulling elections woud be impossible under the current democratic dispensation.

He maintained that in a democracy that is dictated by the rule of law, the people's will must prevail at all times.

"I want you to understand two things; this time, my dear friend, we are playing democracy; that is the government of the people,by the people, and for the people, using political parties and the rule of law. So, I can't see anybody annulling my election in a democratic society. Don't forget that I ran a military government," Mr. Babangida said.

He debunked insinuations that a plan is afoot for him to defect to the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), saying it is mere speculation.

"It is a speculation. You know you people (journalists) have a very fertile mind and you think about virtually everything. So you know it remains a speculation."

The retired general clarified the north's position on zoning, saying the south started the whole idea about zoning, not the north, and it is because the Peoples' Democratic Party wants to be fair that it adopted zoning.

"The whole idea of zoning started from the south, from those who feared that the north has continued to dominate the political environment since independence. And I think the complaints were genuine, and there was a party which felt that this complaint was genuine and agreed that power should rotate. And then it had the support of the people who wanted fairness, justice, and in the name of getting everybody involved on how to rule the country," he explained.

RE: NO ROOM FOR ANNULMENT
Kindly permit me to respond to the above heading through your media; the above heading was published in Nigeria Tribune of 16th July, 2010. It is disheartening that IBB can come out to make such a statement, statement like this should not come from the mouth of our leaders, even if no one have the intention of annulling the election if he indeed win, based on this challenge from him, if I am in the position to annul it, I wouldn’t think twice before annulling the election, no man dare challenge the government of the day, no matter whatever his status may be, even if he as ruled this great country for hundred years, he shouldn’t have been talking the way he is doing of late. This is what make General Muhammadu Buhari that he betrayed to be popular than him, General Muhammadu Buhari was robbed thrice, first by this very IBB, Second in 2003 election and third 2007 election. The gentle General never makes statement/speeches that can cause this our beloved nation problem.
Nigerian are watching you all, you want to rule this country and you are busy talking of North versus South, South versus North, please no region versus any, expect you versus the very North were you claim you come from and the rest of the country, while you are on sit, what did you do for the North. When our leader(s) want power, they use region, religion and tribe as excuse; we are tired of this gimmick. The north and the south shall continue living in harmony Insha Allah, kindly don’t cause us any problem, if you want to campaign please go ahead and do so and stop using north and south unnecessarily.
Let me put it to you, there was never a civil war in this country, and we pray that there should be none, you almost cost us one in 1993 when you annul that year election which you wasted our hard earned resource to conduct. What happened in the 60’s – 1970 was Nigeria versus Biafra. That War did not reach south West neither did it reach the Northern part of the country. This is to tell you that it did not consume the entire nation. If what happened in the 60’s should happen now, this country will be disintegrated, again we don’t pray for such may God forbid it. As a result of this, I am pleading all our leaders /politician to be mindful of what they say. Do not use region, religion or tribe to campaign. In your quest to be the only northern hero you destroyed many promising northern young military officer, series of planes conveying young northern military officers crashed while you were ruling and this plane black box were never found.
Please borrow wisdom from the gentle easy going General Muhammadu Buhari whom you denial access to burry his beloved Mother. And if you refused to learn from the great General, then learn from the great Mallam Aminu Kano of blessed memory a patriotic Nigeria. Insha Allahu, the North and South we remain one entity.

I think IBB should be recommended to the psychiatry. Has he forgotten so soon?
That he institutionalised corruption in our nation. That he laid the basic foundation for our numerous problems in Nigeria.
That he killed Dele Giwa; a courageous journalist and bread winner of a family.
That he was instrumental to the death of Chief Gani Fawehinmi; a relentless fighter for the oppressed, a human right activist, an epitome of public interest and the greatest Nigerian that ever lived.
That he annuled the freest and fairest election in the history of this country. That he stole the people's mandate in 1993, the winner of that election and subsequently killed the man of the people.

Why does he think he should benefit from a democracy he once murdered? How does he want to benefit from a democracy that cost the lives of many altruistic Nigerians? Does he even think he should be seen in public places? Does he deserve to live in the midst of men? Does he even deserve forgiveness from his creator?

If he is aware of all these and knows that he has no reasonable explanation or convincing answers to these questions, then he must confirm that he is insane.
Believe me, he should be condemned to an agony of horrible death. He doesn't deserve to live among humans. He has no place in a civilized world. Infact, he is neither meant to be seen nor be heard.

he who killed by the sword will die by the sword. It is natural and we need not beat about the bush on that. IBB cannot win a free andf fair election. It is not possible. If he really wants to test his popularity let him contest on another party plarform apart from the PDP that already have in place their rigging machinery.

Let's face it - we have all always suspected Ibrahim Babangida of being a drug dealer. The story of Gloria Okon, Dele Giwa's death, the burning of the Ministry of Defence and other stories are all allegedly tied to an official drug ring during IBB's regime. We researched the rumors, and this is what we found.

In an authoritative report still posted on the web site of the Canadian Parliament on the drug trade in Africa, Labrouse marks out Ibrahim Babangida, Nigeria's former self-appointed president, as one of the drug-dealing dictators in Africa. Read more

dele giwa

Dele Giwa, a journalist, was allegedly murdered on the 26 of October 1986 by the former military dictator Ibrahim Babaginda - following damning publications. Close observers of the Nigerian media feared then it was the beginning of harsh military dictatorship in the country. It was a true assessment.

Babangida refused to appear before the duly constituted Oputa panel, giving assorted reasons for his refusal. Ray Ekpu, Giwa's colleague, said: Well, the government may say that the killers have not been found but the killers are known. ...Many Nigerians agree that it was a state sponsored terrorism and that he was assassinated by the state. Read More

Nigeria's military dictatorship, led by General Ibrahim Babangida, annulled the Jun 12 presidential election and canceled plans to return the nation to civilian rule. Britain, the United States and France condemned the latest military takeover and threatened to toughen sanctions against NigeriaAbacha urged all Nigerians to forget the June 12 election.

Lagos lawyer, Gani Fawehinmi, however, said: "June 12 is a symbol of our democracy. It was a day Nigeria and Nigerians without any discrimination whatsoever united in voting Chief MKO Abiola in the freest election in the history of election in Nigeria. ... Read More

Most Nigerian leaders have been corrupt, but Ibrahim Babangida added new, historic elements to corruption. One prime example is what he did with the defunct BCCI Bank. BCCI's activities in Nigeria were so profoundly, overwhelmingly corrupt as to suggest a very significant level of corruption in Nigerian officialdom generally.

Whereas BCCI's activities in most countries merely involved corrupting a few, key people, in Nigeria the corruption was systemic and endemic, and touched nearly every operation of the bank in Nigeria. The bank was operated by Babangida and his friends, including a deposed powerful ruler in northern Nigeria. Read More
